I recently set up mongodb, elasticsearch, and graylog. MongoDB and elasticsearch are working OK, however graylog is giving me trouble. When I check the status of graylog, it runs sometimes and fails other times. Please assist since I am new to this.

Can you share what steps you used to install/configure graylog?
Can you share the server.log (/var/log/graylog-server/server.log)?
Additionally you can try to running the process manually via:
sudo -u graylog /usr/share/graylog-server/bin/graylog-server
to see if you get an error and if so which error.
