Will MongoDB ever be replaced?

With support for Elasticsearch version 5 in the works, will there soon be work done on providing alternates for MongoDB? If so, what options will we have and what would be the target release date?

Currently and in the foreseeable future: no.

Pull requests to add an abstraction and replace MongoDB in Graylog are also unlikely to be merged due to the large parts of the codebase it touches.
