question about the license of the free version of graylog

I work at a company and we are looking for Syslog Soultions, one company showed a a soultion which is basicly a VM with multiple software installed on it for snmp and syslog (in this case Graylog)

so they are selling a “software license“ and called it a name.

They graylog version on this machine is the free one but they are asking for money for the license of using this machine, and if the license they provided expired for the VM i cant access graylog, this sound very fishy to me, is this legal?

Hi @boot
Graylog Open is licensed under the Server Side Public License (SSPL). Full license text: https://www.mongodb.com/licensing/server-side-public-license — and a plain-language explanation of what it means: https://graylog.org/post/graylog-v4-0-licensing-sspl/

The SSPL allows free use, modification, and redistribution of Graylog. The primary restriction applies to companies selling Graylog as a service — they can do so, but must open source all surrounding infrastructure. Basically, if you are going to make money off the community, then you need to give back to the community. It does not restrict internal use or bundling Graylog as part of a larger solution, where the larger application is sold, with Graylog quietly part of the backend application infrastructure. Sounds like this offering could potentially be in violation of the license, but we would need to know a bit more first.

Graylog Open is freely available for download and can be run directly on your own hardware or in the cloud. If you have questions/concerns or want to learn more about our Cloud offering, feel free to contact us.
