Trying graylog ... basic functions don't work

I’ve installed graylog-4.0.15-1.ova appliance on Proxmox hypervisor.

I configured inputs for syslog TCP and syslog UDP. The statistics on both show that I have messages coming in. On the top of the web UI there is “4 in / 4 out” at times, showing there are some messages.

I have never managed to see anything in “Search” or “Show received messages”.

There is nothing scary in System / Overview that I can identify.

Now I’m stuck, as I understand Extractors are not mandatory, I should see at least something. I watched a youtube video of a random person configuring about the same thing, they can see the messages without any Extractors.

Something is wrong, but I can’t figure out what exactly. Must be something simple, “appliance” should work without that much pain, right. Maybe I need to switch to an older version that works? Anyone knows a version that works? Or a trick that makes it work?

UPDATE: after just waiting ~ 1 hour, it started working. I have no idea what happened, I did not configure anything additionally.

My suggestion would be to add “wait 45 minutes” to the “Getting Started” page as temporary solution for this…

I also installed Appliance 3.3.16 in addition to 4.0.15. The behavior is exactly the same: you need to wait before it starts working.

If your just see logs/message after 45 minutes check your Date/time on Graylog Server and Remote devices ( NTP). Make sure its correct
