# Connecting to elasticsearch from external application

**1. Describe your incident:**  
I’m attempting to figure out if it’s possible to query the elasticsearch instance that runs on the datanode from outside of Graylog. I can hit it, but cannot auth to it and I’m unsure where it gets it’s username/password. I’ve tried the admin/root/default sorts of passwords that I have for Graylog and nothing works.

**2. Describe your environment:**

- OS Information: Docker running on Debain 10

- Package Version: 5.2

- Service logs, configurations, and environment variables:  
N/A

**3. What steps have you already taken to try and solve the problem?**

- Used all the passwords/usernames that I know of against my instance @ port 9200.
- Searched the docs for elastic password setup.

**4. How can the community help?**

- Let me know if this is a supported usage and how I can find the auth info for the elastic instance.

No not currently, there will be a way to do it for certain uses cases in 6.0.
